 GERMAN BLUE RAM

THE GERMAN BLUE RAM  (MICROGEOPHAGUS RAMIREZI) IS A SELECTIVELY BRED VERSION OF ITS WILD COUNTERPART.   BREEDING SPECIMENS HAVE BEEN CHOSEN FOR BOTH COLOR AND GREATER SIZE.  EVEN BEING LARGER THAN ITS WILD COUSINS, THE GERMAN RAM ONLY GROWS TO 3 INCHES (7.5cm).  THE ORIGINAL SPECIMENS WERE COLLECTED THROUGHOUT COLOMBIA AND VENEZUELA AND CAME FROM A SLIGHTLY ACID PH AND SOFT WATER.  THE GERMAN VARIETY IS OFTEN RAISED IN ALKALINE WATER (pH 7.5) AND MEDIUM HARDNESS.

A MIXED DIET OF FROZEN BLOOD WORMS AND FLAKE FOOD WILL PRODUCE DEEPER COLORS THAN DRY FOOD ALONE.

A PEACEFUL CICHLID, THE GERMAN RAM IS BEST KEPT WITH ANGELS, APISTOGRAMMA AND EVEN DISCUS.

MALES HAVE SLIGHTLY LONGER RAYS AT THE FRONT OF THE DORSAL FIN.  PAIRS SPAWN IN SMALL CAVES OR BETWEEN SMOOTH ROCKS.  EGGS HATCH IN ABOUT 3 DAYS AT 82 DEGREES.  PAIRS DEFEND A 10" RADIUS AROUND THE NEST.
