 TETRAODON MIURUSIS

THE TETRAODON MIURUSIS IS A FRESHWATER PUFFER FROM THE CONGO.  IT COMES FROM A PH OF 7-8, AND A WATER TEMP OF 78 TO 82 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT.   THIS PUFFER IS TOTALLY FRESHWATER, NOT BRACKISH.  AS A PREDATORY PUFFER, THE MIURUSIS OFTEN SITS ON THE BOTTOM TO AMBUSH PREY, SOMETIMES BURYING ITSELF UP TO ITS EYES.

THE MIURUSIS HAS AMAZING CHAMELEON LIKE POWERS AND CAN CHANGE ITS APPEARANCE TO MATCH THE COLOR AND TEXTURE OF ITS SURROUNDINGS.  GROWING TO A MAXIMUM LENGTH OF 6-7", LARGER TANKMATES WOULD BE A GOOD CHOICE.  BEING SLIGHTLY QUARRELSOME WITH ITS OWN KIND, ABOUT ONE PUFFER PER SQUARE FOOT OF TANK SPACE SEEMS TO BE THE MAGIC NUMBER FOR KEEPING MORE THAN ONE.

THE PUFFER ENJOYS MEATY, FROZEN FOODS, LIKE FROZEN BLOOD WORMS AND KRILL.  AN OCCASIONAL SMALL CRAYFISH IS APPRECIATED.

THIS PUFFER IS USUALLY WILD CAUGHT, AND NOT CURRENTLY SEEN ON ANY COMMERCIAL BREEDING LISTS.  NO RELIABLE SEXING MARKS ARE OBSERVED EXTERNALLY, BUT CAPTIVE SPAWNING HAS BEEN REPORTED.   PAIRS LAY BRIGHT AMBER EGGS ON A FLAT STONE.

MOUTH CONTAINS SHARP BEAK, USE CAUTION WITH VERY SMALL CHILDREN.
