CICHLASOMA UMBRIFERUM

THE "UMBI" ( CURRENT NAME: PETENIA UMBRIFERUM) IS A MONSTER FISH, GROWING OVER 20+ INCHES AND 10 POUNDS.  FOUND MAINLY IN COLOMBIA, (BUT ALL THE WAY UP TO PANAMA),  IN A pH OF 7-8 AND WATER TEMPERATURES OF 79-82 DEGREES.

MALES OUTGROW FEMALES AND DEVELOP A NOTABLE NUCHAL HUMP, ALTHOUGH SPAWNING MAY TAKE PLACE WELL BEFORE ANY OBVIOUS OUTWARD SEXING SIGNS ARE SEEN (6-7").    EASY TO BREED, ALTHOUGH ONE MUST CONSTANTLY MONITOR THE CONDITION OF THE FEMALE DUE TO THE EAGERNESS OF THE MALE.  A LARGE FEMALE CAN LAY 1000 EGGS, HATCHING IN 3-4 DAYS.

THE UMBI DOES WELL ON A DIET OF FROZEN KRILL, EARTHWORMS AND PELLETS.  A PRIME CANDIDATE FOR HOLE IN THE HEAD DISEASE, DO NOT FEED IT GOLDFISH OR ROSIES.  REPORTS ABOUND OF FEEDING THIS FISH LIVE MICE.

THIS FISH IS EXTREMELY TERRITORIAL AND MUST BE KEPT IN A LARGE, VERY CROWDED AQUARIUM.  THE UMBI IS A GOOD TANK MATE FOR TILAPIA BUTTAKOFERI,  RED DEVILS, GIANT GOURAMI AND GRAMMODES.  ONE WOULD BE WISE NOT TO UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF THIS FISH.
